In 1901, Charles Hart and Charles Parr founded the Hart-Parr Company, based first in Madison, WI, before relocating to Charles City, IA. These two visionaries are often credited with coining the word tractor and are considered pioneers in the tractor industry. One of the most iconic models they produced is the Hart-Parr 16-30, which just celebrated its 100th anniversary. Production began in 1924 and this particular model dates back to 1925.

Let’s take a closer look at this historical tractor and explore what made it so special in its time.

The Hart-Parr 1630: A Breakthrough in Agriculture

In 1925, when the Hart-Parr 16-30 was launched, it was a revolutionary piece of machinery. Powered by a 7.6-liter, two-cylinder engine, the tractor is started on petrol before moving over to kerosene. The engine was massive, almost like a stationary engine mounted on a chassis, which gave the tractor its impressive strength. This tractor is equipped with a two-speed gearbox, a hand-operated clutch, along with a reverse gear, providing the operator with essential control.

The model name “16-30” refers to its horsepower rating: 16 horsepower at the drawbar and 30 horsepower at the pulley. Between 1924 and 1926, around 3,000 units of the 16-30 were produced, making it a relatively rare and highly valued collector’s item today. It was superseded by an upgraded model in 1926, featuring higher gearing.

Design and Features

This tractor was a major upgrade from horse-drawn carts. The massive, sturdy frame was designed to endure the tough conditions of the American prairies, where it was primarily used for plowing and cultivating. It had a kerosene tank, a large radiator, and a cooling system that included a water circulation pump. The tractor was also equipped with a magneto for ignition and a crank handle for starting the engine. Despite its simplicity, it was built to be easily maintainable, making it a reliable machine for farmers.

One particularly interesting aspect of the 16-30 is its steering mechanism. A shaft connects the steering wheel to a worm gear, which in turn moves the front wheels. It’s a simple but effective design that allowed for precise control.

The Price of Progress

When it was first released, the Hart-Parr 16-30 cost $13,150—equivalent to about $20,000 in today’s money. At the time, this was roughly the average annual salary for a worker, making the 16-30 a significant investment for farmers. However, for those looking to modernize their farming practices, this tractor was an invaluable tool that would ultimately pay for itself.

Reflecting on a Legacy

Looking at this remarkable tractor, it’s fascinating to think about how far we've come in the last 100 years. While the 16-30 might seem crude by modern standards, it was a game-changer in its time and laid the foundation for the powerful, efficient tractors we rely on today.

We hope you enjoyed this brief look at the Hart-Parr 16-30. Stay tuned for more videos and posts as we continue to explore the history and technology behind iconic machinery like this.
