The Birth of the Chamberlain Super 90

Manufactured between 1962 and 1967 by Chamberlain Industries in Australia, the Super 90 was built during a period when agricultural machinery was evolving at a rapid pace. At the time, the United States was leading the way with large, powerful tractors, and Chamberlain sought to compete with the mighty American machines by creating something just as impressive but uniquely suited to the Australian farming landscape.

Chamberlain Industries, founded in 1949 by Bert Chamberlain, an engineer with a keen understanding of what farmers needed, quickly established itself as a serious contender in the world of tractor manufacturing. The Super 90 was the pinnacle of this ambition—designed not only to be functional but also to stand out in a crowded and competitive market.

A Tractor Ahead of Its Time

What made the Chamberlain Super 90 so remarkable wasn’t just its size or power—it was the incredible engineering that went into its design. At the heart of the Super 90 is a 3-cylinder, 2-stroke, supercharged General Motors diesel engine that produced a staggering 100 horsepower. For context, this was an impressive figure in the 1960s, and this level of power allowed the Super 90 to compete with some of the larger American tractors that were dominating the market at the time.

In fact, the Super 90 was one of the most powerful tractors available during its production run. Its robust engine was paired with an advanced transmission system, which made it suitable not just for standard farming tasks but also for heavy-duty jobs that required sustained power and endurance.

Despite its formidable size, the Super 90’s design ensured that it remained relatively easy to handle, a quality that appealed to farmers across Australia and beyond.

Rarity and Desirability

One of the standout features of the Chamberlain Super 90 is its rarity. Only 803 units were ever built, and today, this makes it a true collector’s item. Most of these tractors were used heavily on farms, which means finding one in good condition—let alone one still operational—is no small feat. Add to that the fact that the Super 90 was never a common sight in the UK, and you have a tractor that is truly exceptional to come across. If you spot one, it’s an opportunity not to be missed.

The cost of manufacturing the Super 90 was high, which explains why only a limited number of units were produced. It’s a testament to the tractor's engineering and the ambition of Chamberlain Industries to build a machine that could rival the best the world had to offer.

A Tractor That Keeps Going

Despite being over 50 years old, the Chamberlain Super 90 is still a capable machine. The tractor we have here at Tamar Vintage Tractors starts easily, having recently been fitted with a new starter motor. It runs and drives smoothly, providing a decent turn of speed on the road.

A Rare Find in the UK

Given the relative scarcity of the Super 90 in the UK, encountering one is a remarkable experience. Most of these tractors were used in Australia, and many have since been exported or retired to museums and private collections. For a piece of Australian engineering to find its way across the world to the UK is no small coincidence—it’s a rare and special find.

For collectors, this isn’t just about owning a tractor; it’s about owning a piece of history. The Chamberlain Super 90, with its distinctive design and powerful engine, stands as a testament to the golden age of tractor engineering, a time when innovation and ambition collided to create machines that were ahead of their time.
